Made in Bodiam Foundry’s woodworking studio for a private client in California, this custom dog house was designed as a permanent and considered part of the home. The brief called for a dedicated space for the client’s dog that felt intentional and well resolved, rather than decorative or purely utilitarian.
The project was guided by material integrity and safety. Built entirely from reclaimed wood and finished with non-toxic, responsibly sourced treatments, the structure was designed for daily use and close contact. Durability was essential, without the object feeling precious or overly refined.
The form takes cues from Bhutanese architecture, particularly softened rooflines and vertical slatted walls that offer protection while remaining open. The design favours light and airflow over enclosure, creating a space that feels calm and inhabitable rather than confined. A cotton fabric roof stretched over a metal frame introduces lightness and balances the solidity of the timber base.
The finished piece sits comfortably between furniture and shelter. Its proportions are restrained, its presence understated. Designed to be used rather than displayed, it remains in daily use as a familiar part of the household.
At Bodiam Foundry, our woodworking studio focuses exclusively on custom projects shaped around specific needs, contexts, and ways of living.
